Activities on Chap Goh Meh

Chap Goh Meh, the hokkien term for the 15th night of the Chinese New Year, known as Yuan Xiao Jie, or Lantern Festival. This marks the last day of traditional Chinese New Year celebrations. Below are the top activities that are usually done on this significant day.

1. Finding True Love on Chinese Valentine’s Day

On this day, single girls would write their names and phone numbers on the mandarin oranges and toss the fruit into the river/ lake, while men will go to the river/ lake and try to scoop out the mandarin oranges. The men will contact the lucky numbers in hope to find their true love.


2. Eating Tang Yuan (glutinous rice ball)

A traditional dessert which made with glutinous rice and sugar and is often served in a sweet syrup or warm ginger syrup soup.


3. Reunion Dinner

Reunion dinner starts on the eve of the Chinese New Year, and the final round of reunion dinner with your family members and perhaps close relatives will fall on Chap Goh Meh.


4. Lantern Riddles

The highlight of the Lantern Festival is guessing lantern riddles. 


5. Prayers at Temples

Praying at temples during this festive season is believed to bring fortunes and luck throughout the year.
