A Move to More Sustainable Packaging by The Lake District

For The Whiskymaker’s Editions – Sequoia, we teamed up with Cumbria based James Cropper, a world-class advanced materials and paper products group, to help create our limited-edition whisky’s packaging.

At the Lakes, we have embraced the way of life in our beautiful home from the very beginning but, one of the greatest challenges we continue to have is to make ethical choices without a detrimental effect on the quality of our spirits.

In 2019, we took an opportunity to review our supply chain and the packaging of our spirits in a bid to move away from the use of single-use plastic and non-recyclable materials.

By no means perfect, removing recycling inhibiting varnishes, switching to a UK based glass bottle supplier, and recycling the waste produced by the copper foiling we use means we have come a long way, but there is more we need to do.

For The Whiskymaker’s Editions – Sequoia, we teamed up with Cumbria based James Cropper, a world-class advanced materials and paper products group, to help create our limited-edition whisky’s packaging.

We opted to use Colorplan paper from GF Smith, manufactured in the Lake District by the leading speciality paper mill.

The impact of Colorplan’s production is measured and reduced at every possible opportunity – from forest management to energy use. As well as being fully recyclable and biodegradable, Colorplan has FSC certification, meaning the pulps used are all from managed forests. It is also Heavy Metal Free and, because the bleaching process avoids the use of harmful chlorine, it is classified ECF.

Using this beautiful paper is a positive step toward a balanced environment, as for every tree felled, three are planted, and the bi-products from the production process are used in agriculture.

It is also made in the Lake District.
